Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual training. Using poses, breathing exercises, and mental awareness in the present moment. Yoga originated in India thousands of years ago. Over time has adapted in other countries in a variety of ways.

Yoga is about finding the higher state of being within yourself and opening your mind to peace, contentment, and understanding. Yoga is so much more than moving from pose to pose. There are 8 limbs of yoga. Limbs are all the factors that go into practicing yoga. Yoga goes beyond the poses and is taught as a life style.

YAMA – Restraints, moral disciplines, or moral vows

NIYAMA – Positive duties or observances

ASANA – Posture

PRANAYAMA – Breathing Techniques

PRATYAHARA – Sense withdrawal

DHARANA – Focused Concentration

DHYANA – Meditative Absorption

SAMADHI – Bliss or Enlightenment

Yoga involves getting into and holding different poses. Yoga has the power to strengthen your mental and physical health. Through breathing exercises, strengthening your muscles, perfecting your balance and posture, and becoming more mobile and flexible.

Because there are so many different types of yoga you can practice yoga daily. Stretching, yoga flow or a calming meditation can easily be added to your daily routine.

Yoga can be performed anywhere with minimal space. You may choose to do it outside or inside, in a studio or in the comforts of your own home. Not much equipment is needed either as most people use nothing but a yoga mat. Something padded can help with slipping in poses, accessories, block, bolsters, and blankets can also be used. To enhance the experience of yoga you may also use calming smells like candles or oils or add in nature sounds or soothing music. Wear something that is flexible and comfortable to move around in.

Yoga can spend as little as 10-minute doing light meditation or light stretching or spend over an hour with a variety of yoga sequences.

Depending on the practice you wish to do from yoga flow to hot yoga, you can burn between 200- 600 calories.

Yoga is known for having many different modifications for every pose. Depending on the client’s ability and flexibility. It is recommended to start slowly and ease into each pose. There are also many classes for beginners or advanced students. Remember if you are taking a yoga class either in studio or a video that you first listen to your body, take breaks when needed or stop the practice all together.
